Burkina Faso Reportedly Gives Condition For The Release Of 11 Detained Nigerian Soldiers

The Burkina Faso military leadership is determined to arm twist the Nigeria’s authority into agreeing to their terms for the release of eleven Nigerian soldiers who are currently detained in the country.

Recall that on the 9th of December, the Burkina Faso’s military authority confirmed that they have confiscated Nigeria’s C-130 Aircraft for violating the country’s airspace.

The Nigeria’s military is said to have informed the Burkina Faso’s leadership that the confiscated military aircraft was Portugal bound and had made an emergency landing in the country. However, the Burkina Faso’s junta is skeptical about the Nigeria’s story and believe the aircraft had derailed from Benin Republic following Nigeria’s deployment of such aircraft to Benin Republic to prevent military coup.

Reports claim that the eleven Nigerian soldiers have been moved into solitary confinement while the Burkina Faso’s military government has reportedly outlined some stringent conditions for their release.

In December 2023, the Burkina Faso’s military authority arrested four French nationals in Ouagadougou who were reportedly spying on the country. Though the French government denied that the four arrested Frenchmen were spies, the four French citizens were held in Burkina Faso for a year before their release after the French government reportedly met the conditions outlined by Burkina Faso for their release.

According to reports, Burkina Faso requested one hundred and fifty million euros and some military equipment in exchange for the release of the four Frenchmen.

After months of negotiation between the French government and that of Burkina Faso through Morocco mediation, the Burkina Faso’s government freed the detained French nationals in December 2024, one year after they were arrested in Burkina Faso. Reports say that the French government through a proxy, paid the Burkina Faso’s government sixty million euros alongside with some heavy artillery equipment. But the French government later denied making any payment for the release of their nationals.

Reports also suggest that Burkina Faso has given more outrageous conditions to the Nigerian government for the release of the eleven detained Nigerian airmen. While the exact amount of money being requested by the Junta is not yet known but report says it is far more than the amount the Burkina Faso regime demanded from the French government in 2023/2024.

Report also claim that the Nigeria’s government is considering the conditions given for the release of the eleven Nigerian soldiers and does not consider military action on Burkina Faso.
