Tragedy in Ecuador: Catholic priest dies after a crucifix fell on him during a livestream mass

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a Catholic priest in Guayaquil, Ecuador, has d+ed after a large crucifix suddenly fell on him while he was celebrating Mass on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The shocking incident happened during a livestream of the church service, capturing the priest as he addressed worshippers before the heavy cross unexpectedly came crashing down on him.

Father Molinari served as the parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, also known as Perpetuo Socorro.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his d+ath on Sunday, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the priest and remembering his service to the Church.

In its tribute, the archdiocese said he had departed “for the Father’s House to rejoice in His presence and glory,” while praying that God would grant him eternal rest.

It is a heartbreaking loss, and a tragic incident that has left many people in shock.
